B East Spring Final

Philly’s Phinest vs Birds of War


We kick off the finals with Philly’s Phinest batting first. Scott Vogelman draws a walk as the second batter, but Birds of War turn a double play on Mike Rocks Jr and get out of the inning 1-2-3. Birds of War steps up and Austin Devlin leads off and reaches on an error. Jay Cowan singles and Austin scores to get the scoring started. Matt Jacobson hits a sac fly to score Cowan and then Justin Kneebone and John Laino swap places with doubles, with Laino picking up an RBI. He then scores when Chris Day reaches on an error. Birds of War pick 4 up in the bottom of the first. Philly’s Phinest comes up in the top of the second and rips off 4 singles from Ray Rocks, Billy Schubert, Chris Rommel, and Steve Walker, with Rommel and Walker picking up RBI’s. John Quartullo gets ones on a sac fly, and Steve Walker scores on an error. Philly’s Phinest tie it back up at 4 going into the bottom of the second. Austin Devlin gets a 1 out double and then score when Jay Cowan reaches on an error and Birds of War take the lead back 5-4. Philly’s Phinest starts the third with a 1 out single from Joe Carpino and then they get two more singles from Scott Vogelman and Mike Rocks Jr, with Rocks Jr picking up the RBI. Ray Rocks gets a two RBI triple and scores on a Billy Schubert single. Philly’s Phinest takes their first lead going into the bottom of the 3rd, 8-5. Birds of War comes out with a leadoff Ryan Thompson single then a John Laino double and Chris Day hits them both in with a two rbi single, but Birds of War can’t get any runs across after a Sonny Rey single and leave two on. Birds of War tightens up the defense and in the top of the 4th, 5th, and 6th Philly’s Phinest manages a single from Chris Rocks, a walk, and an error, getting only one base runner each inning. Birds of War takes advantage of their defense in the bottom of the fifth and, all with two outs, get started with Sonny Rey reaching on an error, Ryan McAvey scores him on an rbi double and then Anthony Mauceri follows it with a single. Austin Devlin gets an RBI single and then Jay Cowan picks up an RBI with a double of his own. Matt Jacobson knocks Devlin and Cowan in with a two rbi double and then Justin Kneebone caps off the scoring with an rbi single. Birds of War score 6 in the bottom of the 5th and take a 13-8 lead. Down 5, Philly’s Phinest gets two outs on their first two batters and then Chris Rocks gets on the turn the lineup over. Joe Carpino and Scott Vogelman both get singles to load the bases with two outs, and Mike Rocks Jr get two in on a single. Ray Rocks adds a single of his own to get it within two, but a deep flyball is caught and Philly’s Phinest falls short of the comeback.

Birds of War win game 1 13-11

Game 2

We switch sides and start on game two. Birds of War start off the same exact way with their first two batters as game one, with Austin Devlin reaching on an error and Jay Cowan following it with a single. Justin Kneebone picks up the RBI’s this time and gets two on a single and then John Laino knocks him in with an RBI double after Ryan Thompson moves him over with a single. Birds of War put three up in the first. Philly’s Phinest come right out in the bottom though, with a single from Scott Vogelman and Mike Rocks JR before a Ray Rocks rbi double. Chris Rommel picks up 2 RBIs to tie it with a single and we are tied after one. Birds of War manages just a single from Ryan McAvey in the second before Philly’s Phinest takes the lead in the bottom of the inning. John Quartullo gets a one out single and then Drew Costello hits a 2 run Home Run to take a 5-3 lead after two. Both teams go scoreless in the third, with Birds of War getting a single from Jay Cowan and Justin Kneebone and Philly’s Phinest getting a single from Joe Carpino. In the fourth, Birds of War get singles from Chris Day and Ryan McAvey before Anthony Mauleri picks up the RBI single. Austin Devlin gets another across with a sac fly and then Jay Cowan gets an RBI triple and scores on an error on the next play. Birds of War add 4 to retake the lead. They clamp down on defense and Philly’s Phinest can only manage a walk in the fourth. Birds of War capitalizes on the defense with another big inning. The get 4 singles in a row from Ryan Thompson, John Laino, Chris Day, and Sonny Rey, with Day and Rey picking up RBIs, and then a big two RBI triple from Anthony Mauleri. That is followed up by Austin Devlin and Jay Cowan singles, with Devlin picking up another RBI. They score 5 to extend to 12-5. The bottom of the fifth sees Philly’s Phinest bring it closer, with Sean Dougherty and Drew Costello singles and a Chase Rommel walk to load the bases with one out. Chris Rocks comes through with a two RBI single and then Joe Carpino gets one on a sac fly. They add three to bring it to 12-8 going into the sixth. Birds of War get two of those runs back to keep the cushion with a John Laino solo Home Run and then Sonny Rey singles, Ryan McAvey moves him with a single, and Anthony Mauleri knocks him in with a single of his own. The bottom of the sixth sees Philly’s Phinest start with a Mike Rocks Jr double, but two groundouts to short and a pop out to first strand him. Birds of War adds two more in the top of the seventh, with Jay Cowan leading off with a single and Ryan Thompson getting a single of his own. John Laino gets an RBI double and then Chris Day singles but the third out comes with an outfield assist to throw Laino out to save the run. Down by 8, Philly’s Phinest hope that the throw-out at the plate will be the momentum swing they need. They lead off with a Steve Walker single and then get a John Quartullo single to put two on. Drew Costello hits a 3 run Home Run, but Philly’s Phinest flies out to short and grounds out to third to end the game and the series.

Birds of War wins 16-11 and win the B East Championship 2-0
