Labor Day 1-Pitch Tournament / Results 2026

You couldn't ask for a better day of softball. People having fun playing it, people having fun watching it, and people having fun just hanging out. Starting at 8:00 am, 16 games were played inside an hour each. Lots of low scoring defensive games with a few 40-plus-run 9 and 10-inning games.
Team 5 (Horchuck/Minnick) and Team 4 (Brancato/Tercha) maneuvered their way through the loser's bracket to meet in a Game 15 classic. 10 innings and 46 runs later, Team 5 (Horchuck/Minnick) prevailed. On to the winner's bracket where they will faceoff vs. Team 7 (Frelick/Hensman). With no rest for the weary, Team 5 regrouped ready, willing, and able. Meantime, Team 7 was well rested with 3 wins under their belts, no losses, all while giving up a paltry total of 20 runs. If you think this would be a mismatch, you would be right. Team 7 came out swinging and never stopped. 4 innings later, the game was declared over on a TKO (technical knock out). Final score: 21-1. Nothing should be taken away from Team 5. It was a gallant tourney effort. They just met a team that was rested, well-gelled, and riding high.
Congrats to Tess Frelick and Ryan Hensman on drafting a well rounded team that gelled to perfection.
Tourney Tidbits
Glen Hipple played in and won the inaugural 1-pitch tourney in the fall of 2001. It took him 25 years to win another and believe me, he didn't miss many tourneys. There are league members that play these tournament for decades and NEVER make it to the winner's circle. Then you have league members like Richie Hall, Meghan Squartino, Steve Day, and Jared Hauseman who win it in their very first attempt. After years of trying, Eric Schade nailed his first title.
Side Note
Tourney attendees did not take care of their trash business as I had asked. Teams left trash on both player benches, everywhere on the bleachers and all along the tent areas. I found myself emptying and disposing of cans and bottles at the end of the night while Curt and Stephanie did the same to a much greater degree. If you want to continue having these tournaments, please remember to NOT 'defecate where you dine'. Lord only knows how late Curt and Steph were there last night and how long it will take Billy to get the field presentable this morning.
